Character Name: Thor, Odinson.
Source: Movies – specifically the Marvel Universe
Personality: In a way, one could say there are two Thors. Thor of Asgard, the loyal son and proud warrior who thirsts for battle and possesses from a very young age the need to prove himself, and Thor of Midgard. A fallen Prince in a strange land who must learn the traits of humility and sacrifice that is lacking in his attitude and character to become King as he seeks to be.
Both are like two sides of a coin, connected but inevitably never meeting. It is this balance that Thor craves to achieve when he spends time on Midgard from his banishment... a lesson at first he rejects needing from Odin, his father.
When he is able to see past the need for being better than he already is, for it is not his deeds but the heart he puts into them, the intentions he keeps that are really important – it is then he realises that a true King does not need one single instant to prove himself but that it is continuous. It is an ongoing process that extends throughout his rule and not just something that he is known for; a disillusion the young Thor had from an early age.
This stemmed from a combination of hero-worship of his father, Odin, who had banished The Frost Giants from Midgard and all the realms, and a desire, perhaps, to grow up quickly.
There was also an element of rivalry between his brother Loki and himself; His father’s assurance that both of them “were born to be kings” was disregarded by Thor in favour of the warning “only one could ascend to the throne.”
This determination, not to be outdone, was another factor that spurred Thor on to grow into a man who was brash, impulsive and thought with his heart more than his head. He became the kind of man who would rush forward into battle at the merest hint of challenge or threat, craving the glory that it would bring to his name.
For example, when, during what would have been his coronation there is a sneak attack on the palace vault by the Front Giants, Thor’s first instinct, even as his father averts the threat, is to take their anger out on Jotunheim. As far as he is concerned, not retaliating showed weakness and a lack of courage in the face of an obvious challenge; so rare is it that any intruders can enter Asgard undetected. Thor sees only what he perceives to be the start of something much bigger and his thinking is thus: “if they can get in once, they will again.” Whoever agrees with him, he sees as with sense, and he goads his friends, The Warrior Three and Sif to join him.
This is pivotal moment for Thor as a character as it leads to his banishment to Midgard and the start of war once more between Jotunheim and Asgard.
The transition from a godly Prince who commands thousands, to a normal man on Earth is at first disastrous. Knowing little of custom and of dress, Thor’s life and interactions on the foreign plane are a slow, if humorous, learning process. Insulted that he must learn new ways, and hurt from his father’s words as he cast him off, Thor comes off as pretentious and spoilt to the mortals he encounters, declaring clothes will merely suffice for him, that coffee is delicious (before duly smashing the cup he just drank) and upon learning the location of Mjolnir, setting out to “claim what belongs to him” regardless of Jane Foster’s warnings of the government being involved and claiming the mysterious item.
It takes his failure to lift Mjolnir – his true weapon – where others have failed for the error of his ways to truly sink in for Thor and he resigns himself, finally, to his punishment, forging a life on Midgard. The change in him is perceived by his friends when they pass the Bifrost to return him to an unhappy Asgard, which Loki now rules, in his refusal to return because he accepts that his father’s punishment was fitting and what he needed.
In the ensuing battle with the creature sent by Loki, he makes sure to instead get Jane and her friends out of the way and to safety, allowing the warriors to do battle instead. He orders Sif, a woman of pride who only listens to the call of battle as he does, to stand down when defeat is imminent rather than push forward and steps out, weaponless, offering himself as a tribute for Loki. Knowing his brother’s source of hatred and anger is himself, he invites it willingly, despite not understanding why - all he can see is his brother's pain. If his death is a way to end it, then Thor declares himself ready to take it.
It is this act that finally undoes the enchantment Odin placed on the Hammer. Thor becomes ‘worthy’ of his power once more and has them, and Mjolnir, finally restored to him.
His first instinct, is to return to Asgard and stop Loki from committing any more treachery and, despite the clear enmity that his brother now places dividing them; he still seeks to talk rather than fight, to understand why he is doing what he is – a stark contrast to the proud and impulsive Thor of old.
What drives him now is still his heart, but it isn’t with the intention for gain to himself he fights for, but for others. He destroys the bridge connecting Asgard to the Bifrost chamber – despite knowing he will never again see Jane if he does – because he knows not doing so would mean the destruction of Jotunheim’s innocents. He owes them nothing, but sees the error in Loki’s madness of ‘cleansing’ them all of the Frost Giants as being, not the solution he once welcomed, but a tragedy.
All in all, there are several things that govern Thor and his intentions, rule all that he does. This is primarily rooted to what is the right thing to do for himself, what he feels as a warrior, as a man and as a Prince.
He still has much to learn about teamwork, but he has become more open because of the experiences his banishment gave him. He is more willing to compromise, takes advice and when offered aid, will perhaps more often than not accept, especially if it can avoid anyone being hurt. Though he can still be quick to judge to suspicion if it is aroused as he still possesses traits of impulsiveness, Thor has enough control to try and think about it now, more than before, and here some intervention is perhaps useful, especially if by his friends.
Fundamentally, Thor is kind-hearted with an easy personality and demeanor, with a heart as golden as his hair. Thor will also always strive to do right by the people he must protect. He regards both the Asgardians and Midgardians among those as he views both realms and lands as his home...
History/Pull Point:
http://marvel.wikia.com/Thor_(film) is an overview of the plot of the movie
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Avengers_(2012_film) for the Avenger’s point in time.
NOTE: these are perhaps best viewed as brief synopsis (see personality for canon examples better fitted to describe Thor/his motives) as I am taking Thor only from movie-canon and not implementing any elements of the comics as I have never read them.
I will be playing Thor post-movie and at the point of The Avengers’ movie’s beginning. He is now a member of a team and must learn how to work within one as he seeks to stop his brother Loki once more from causing destruction of the world, this time through Midgard.
As far as how he got in the game goes.. I’m going to say he was pulled in by some unknown force, and meets with his friends, The Avengers to find a way back to Earth / Midgard.
Abilities/Special Powers/Non average skills: Thor is the God of Thunder by popular tell and this refers to his ability to control and implement the elements and electricity through the force of power contained in his weapon Mjolnir.
His appearance is that of a normal man, but he is thought to be older by Asgardian standards and past the age of maturity, which is why he was ready to be crowned king. He has keen senses, beyond that of a normal mortal, though these were probably lessened when he was cast off to Midgard and banished and will probably be in use in the game as well.
Thor is a superb hand-to-hand combatant, and also skilled in armed combat, excelling in the use of the sword and mace, in addition to Mjolnir itself. He is not easily overcome and believes in victory, driven by honor and desire to succeed when for himself and when defending of others he is getting better at planning his moves but ultimately he works on instinct here too.
Items he will bring in: Mjolnir; the Hammer, his patented weapon. It can control all natural weather and is vastly powerful when struck, whether to ground or to an unfortunate opponent.
Only Thor is able to both lift and yield it for use so it is useless when happened upon by any stranger. If Mjolnir and Thor are separated he is able to summon it, purely by will to return to his hand. It is Mjolnir upon which he relies on in battle, half of his strength, perhaps, is centred to it so he can’t be without it or he is incomplete…
[Game Specific]
Character class: Knight
Why your character would be that class: already a prince, I believe purely on a statistic level this will make Thor at least a little more agreeable to the place initially, once he halts his rage at being thrust into another foreign land against his wishes!
Knights are stated to be loyal defenders with a strong sense of morality and this also describes Thor to a T; he is also already highly skilled in swordsmanship and riding a horse so he would fit into the role quite easily.
Powers/skills to be gained by being that class: perhaps little would be gained so much as implemented. Thor already possesses the skills, but learning to use them on a daily basis in a place so different to his homeland could prove to be a welcome challenge for him and so I believe it to be a fitting class for him to be a part of.
One could dare say he’d be an asset of sorts though he would probably have to rein in his natural leadership, however, as the Knights will probably all be working solo and uninterested in banding together. This can work out well for Thor as he is someone who likes to go out on his own and achieve victory…
[Samples]
Log sample:
Thor's hands so used to carrying a sword and training until now, preparing for a battle that he thought was inevitable, soothe slowly across the horse's neck as it whinnies uneasily, clicking under his teeth. "Be at ease."
He pats its neck, sharp blue gaze turning once more behind him where they had ridden at a hard pace away from whatever had frightened the creature. There was something odd about this realm, he knew that as soon as his eyes had opened. Magic was faint here, in the air.. but as if a pulse. Not one energy that could belong to one individual or many at a time, but many different kinds. This could mean trouble more easily than it could be benficial; he doubted anyone here would be willing to listen and help. Clint had often commented on his size and stature as being 'intimidating' however friendly and open his comradie as he spoke. Thor held no desire to be so, but when people had already judged for themselves, he wouldn't deter them. Time was wasting as he lingered and he had to get back. His friends -- had they noticed he had gone?
He didn't entertain any notion of distress amongst them happening; Steve's firm leadership would ensure of that if not their individual control and sense.
I must return, he thought, hitching himself up over the saddle once more as he felt the horse stamp nervously once more.
"Come now - hyah!" he urged, tugging the reins up as it reared up and galloped on once more, his eyes straight ahead and steady.
Orb sample:
Be gone. [his voice is soft, but firm as he observes the horse. It seems not to want to part from him. Thor's hand pressed over his chest, feeling the steel mail under his robes...] Strange.
[someone.. had armed him while he slept? Thor could only assume he would be thrust as a common soldier into battle, with this sword and a horse for use. He was no one's pawn! Glancing up, he ignored the soft whinny as his eyes narrowed at the slight sound he had heard to his left. Ah. So it begins?
Well. Anyone who dared to attack him in such a secluded place in ambush, as he was disorientated would get the same treatment as an informed enemy - a strike first. He took up his sword with a practiced hand, gripped it...]
[...he believed he had already thought something along the lines of strange but this -- Thor took a step back from the object floating in front of him at leisure. As if in wait of him. He could see himself in it, and yet...] What...
[he hadn't meant to cause this, but... when he had felt the cool press against his neck, he had been suspicious. Unsure whether he had read this right, he decided this was a realm he would have to take his chances on and play by ear. And so, he spoke -] I, am Thor Odinson... whoever can hear me through this magic, I require some assistance. Where am I, what is this realm.. and how may I leave?
